Introduction
Evidence-based practice (EBP) integrates the best evidence available to guide optimal nursing care, with a goal to enhance safety and quality. EBP is crucial to nursing practice because it incorporates the best evidence from current literature, along with the expertise of the practising nurse. The concern for quality care that flows from EBP generates a desired outcome. Without these factors, a nurse cannot be an effective leader. It is important to lead not only from this position but from knowledge and expertise. To gain the knowledge, you require a good understanding of how to search for scholarly resources, as well as identify which databases and websites are credible for the purposes of implementing evidence-based changes in practice.

You are supervising three nurses working on the medical-surgical floor of a local teaching hospital. This hospital is nationally recognized as a leader in education and has a computer lab with an online library where staff has access to medical research databases (that is, CINAHL, PubMed, Medline, and Cochrane library) and online sources of all hospital policies, procedures, and guidelines, and computers at nurse workstations that also have access to these resources. A new nurse who just completed orientation and training a week ago approaches you and tells you that one of the assigned patients has a diagnosis he or she is very unfamiliar with. Knowing that patient-centered care based on best practices is imperative to positive patient outcomes, you want to assist this nurse in finding research that can be utilized to provide the best care for this patient. Central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) occurs within forty-eight hours after the placement of a central line (Patel et al., 2022). The diagnosis of this nosocomial infection is dependent on positive laboratory results. Haddadin et al. (2022) report that CLABSI is the nosocomial infection with the highest cost burden. The cost of managing a case of CLABSI is more than $45,000 (Haddadin et al., 2022).
In this assessment, the newly trained nurse is handling a patient with CLABSI. According to him, it is his first encounter with CLABSI. As such, he requires guidance on the management of CLABSI. Furthermore, he wishes to know the prevention strategies for CLABSI. This paper identifies communication strategies to facilitate the diagnosis of CLABSI. Also, it identifies the sources of information and the relevance of these sources.
Nurses should communicate effectively to allow information sharing and promote research. Secondly, cloud computing features such as Dropbox will promote collaboration by allowing nurses to access updated and synchronized information (Rutledge et al., 2021). This will facilitate timely access and sharing of information.
Nurses should seek information on the management and prevention of CLABSI from various places. To begin with, they should seek information from online medical databases. These databases provide pertinent resources, such as peer-reviewed journals that explore various aspects of CLABSI. Furthermore, the databases allow nurses to select the most current evidence. Secondly, nurses should seek evidence from the health care facility’s guidelines, standard procedures, and policies. This information can be found in the hospital’s online database. This source is relevant because it enables nurses to embrace the hospital’s guidelines and procedures. Thirdly, organizational websites provide information related to the treatment and prevention guidelines. In addition, they provide resources, policies, and procedures to guide the actions of nurses and other clinicians.
Nurses should embrace online medical databases and websites to seek evidence on the management and prevention of CLABSI. Examples of these databases and websites include the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, and organizational websites such as the CDC. CINAHL and Cochrane Library are the most useful databases because their journals focus on nursing and other health-related practices (Hopia & Heikkilä, 2020). On the other hand, organizational websites are ranked fifth because they may not have updated information. The credibility and relevance of the information sought from these sources will be evaluated by focusing on their currency, authority, purpose, and accuracy.
The selected sources will provide adequate evidence on the management and prevention of CLABSI. Firstly, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Scopus will allow nurses to access current information on CLABSI.
